Nidoran’s name is the same in both English and Japanese, but that still doesn’t completely explain where it came from. It may just be completely arbitrary — or its Japanese namegivers actually looked up the Latin word for smell or stink, which happens to be nidor… Not a bad fit, considering we’re talking about a poisonous rat.
